Looking After and Cleaning Your Sex Toy
Because a happy toy = a happy you.
Whether you're brand new to sex toys or you’ve got a rainbow drawer full of them (yes, we’re jealous), caring for your toys is just as important as choosing the right one. Proper cleaning and storage keeps your toy safe, your bits healthy, and your solo or shared fun smooth and drama-free.
Here’s everything you need to know about cleaning, storing, and generally loving on your sex toys.
Why Cleaning Matters
We know, it’s not the sexiest part of the experience—but it’s essential. After you’ve finished using your toy (whether alone or with a partner), bacteria, lube residue, and bodily fluids can hang around. If not cleaned properly, they can build up over time and potentially cause infections or make your toy degrade faster.
And nobody wants that.
Let’s Talk Materials
Not all toys are made the same, and what your toy is made of determines how you clean it. At Godemiche, we only make body-safe, non-porous silicone toys—so we’ll focus on that. But if you own toys from other places (we won’t judge), check what they’re made of before following this guide.
Non-porous materials (like silicone, glass, stainless steel):
✅ Won’t trap bacteria
✅ Easy to clean properly
✅ Safe for long-term use
Porous materials (like jelly rubber, PVC, or some TPRs):
⚠️ Can harbour bacteria
⚠️ Difficult to sanitise
⚠️ We highly recommend upgrading if this sounds like your toy
Cleaning 101: After Each Use
Here’s your quick-and-dirty (but actually clean) method for freshening up your toy after every use:
-
Rinse with warm water – Get rid of any obvious residue.
-
Use unscented, gentle soap – Lather it up with a mild, antibacterial soap. Avoid anything heavily perfumed or harsh (your bits will thank you).
-
Rinse thoroughly – Soap left behind can be irritating.
-
Dry with a clean towel or air-dry – Pat gently or leave your toy to air dry fully before storing it away.
💡 Godemiche Tip: We love using a clean microfibre cloth—it’s soft, absorbent, and doesn’t leave fluff behind.
Deep Cleaning (aka Toy Spa Day)
Every now and then, especially if your toy has been in storage or shared with a partner, give it a deep clean:
For pure silicone toys (like all of ours):
-
Boil it! Yes, really. 3–5 minutes in a pot of boiling water will kill off any lingering nasties. Just don’t let the toy touch the bottom of the pot directly (use tongs or a steam basket if you’re fancy).
-
Or pop it in the dishwasher – Only if there’s no motor or electrical parts. No soap, top rack only, no drying cycle.
⚠️ Do not boil any toys with motors, batteries, or cables (unless you like the smell of burnt plastic and disappointment).
What About Vibrators or Motorised Toys?
You can’t submerge these, so here’s the deal:
-
Use a damp cloth or sponge with mild soap to wipe down the silicone bits.
-
Don’t get the charging port wet (unless it’s marked waterproof).
-
Use a cotton bud to clean little crevices or textured areas.
-
Always double check the manufacturer’s care guide if you're unsure.
Storage Tips: Keep it Clean Between Sessions
-
Store separately – Avoid toys touching each other, especially silicone on silicone, as they can react and degrade.
-
Use cloth storage bags or cases – Many of our toys come with one, and if not, a clean sock works in a pinch!
-
Keep away from sunlight, dust, and heat – Treat them like you’d treat a good bottle of wine or a cheeky secret.
💡 Lube Lovers Take Note: If you're using silicone lube with a silicone toy, do a spot test first. Some silicone lubes can damage the surface over time.
When to Say Goodbye to a Toy
We know it’s hard, but sometimes the relationship ends. Consider retiring your toy if:
-
It has tears, cracks, or signs of wear
-
The surface feels sticky or tacky (a sign of breakdown)
-
It smells funky even after cleaning
-
It’s made of porous materials and you’ve had it a long time
A Quick Word on Sharing Toys
Sharing is caring—but let’s do it safely.
-
Use a condom over the toy if you're sharing between partners or switching between anal and vaginal use.
-
Clean thoroughly between partners.
-
Open, honest conversations about hygiene and STI status = sexy, not awkward.
In a Nutshell
-
Wash after every use
-
Deep clean regularly
-
Dry fully
-
Store properly
-
Love your toy like it loves you
Final Thoughts
A clean toy is a safe toy. Looking after your sex toy means it’ll look after you—whether that’s a 2am solo session or a steamy night with someone special. And honestly, we’re big fans of showing our toys a little post-play love. They work hard. They deserve it.
