So you have decided to buy yourself a sex toy. Hurrah, for making such a positive decision with regards to your sexual pleasure and well-being. The next question is what sex toy should you buy. Well there are lots of options out there but for the purpose of this article we are tackling that commonly asked question: Should I buy a dildo or a vibrator? And what even is the difference between the two anyway?
Some dildos can also be vibrators and some vibrators can also be used as dildos but some vibrators are only ever vibrators. Wait, what?
What is a dildo?
In simple terms a dildo is a phallic shaped object intended for sexual penetration of the vagina or anus. Humans have been crafting dildos from all sort of materials for pretty much as long as humans have existed. The oldest known dildo is thought to be approximately 30,000 years old and is made from silstone. The newest dildo is obviously the next one we are about to make in our work shop!
Dildos come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. From those that look like an actual penis to ones that are based on myths and legends or designed to reach a certain spot, such as the g-spot or prostrate. There are dildos with suction cups, dildos that look like tentacles, dildos designed to fit in a strap-on harness, soft dildos and hard dildos. Really whatever shape or size dildo you crave someone out there has made for you.
What is a vibrator?
A vibrator is an electrically powered device that vibrates in order to create stimulate certain parts of the body. Most notably the clitoris but also the g-spot, prostate, anus, nipples, scrotum and even the shaft or head of the penis. In fact penis vibrators are a fairly new but increasingly popular sex toy.
Some vibrators are phallic in shape and so also designed for insertion into the body, particularly those which are designed for internal as well as external stimulation. Some vibrators however are designed with other jobs in mind and so are not phallic in design and are not meant to inserted internally. The air technology type vibrators such as the Liberty from Womanizer, which is a personal favourite of Monika’s, are an excellent example of a vibrator designed to stimulate the clitoris.
Again a bit like dildos vibrators come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, designs and colours as well as a huge range of motors and technology creating light buzzing sensations all the way to deep throbbing vibrations that will rumble through your whole body.
Should I buy a dildo?
When it comes to deciding if you should buy a dildo or a vibrator it really depends on what you want your sex toy to do and what kind of stimulation tends to work for you.
Dildos are really good for people who enjoy penetration. Despite over 80% of people with vulva’s needing clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm many people find internal stimulation hugely pleasurable too and often when combined with clitoral stimulation can make for amazing orgasms. Also if you like having your g-spot stimulated or want to try exploring g-spot orgasms and squirting then a dildo designed to do just that, like the Ambit, should definitely be on your sex toy shopping list.
Or course dildos are not just for people with vulva’s either. If you are into anal play and/or pegging then a dildo is definitely going to be in your list of required sex toys. For people with a prostate there are dildos designed specifically with prostate play in mind but also for anyone who enjoys anal penetration then a dildo is going to work. Remember though it is really important that anything you put in your bum has a flared base to stop it getting lost up inside you.
Which dildo should I buy?
That really depends on so many things. How you want to use it? If you like the sensation of being very full or you are looking for something to explore double penetration. Maybe you want something short and fat or long and slim. Maybe something realistic or something from the fantasy realm. It really is up to you but some universal things that you should pay attention to is what any dildo you might interested in buying is made from.
Picking the right dildo is about picking one made from a body safe material just as much as one that is the right shape or size for you. Body safe materials include, glass, stone, ceramic, metal and obviously silicone. Wood can also be a body safe material as long as it has been treated with a body safe varnish. Do your research and make sure your dildo is made from quality materials that are not going to harbour germs or harm your body.
Should I buy a Vibrator?
Should you buy a vibrator or a dildo is all about where and what you want to use it for. If you don’t really like or get off on any sort of penetration then buying a vibrator designed to stimulate your clitoris sounds like a good choice for you. Vibrators can also be particularly good for people with vulva’s who have never orgasmed before or whom need a lot of stimulation to reach orgasm. They can also be great if you wanting to try and squirt. Likewise for people with vulva’s who are post the menopause and finding it harder to orgasm a vibrator can definitely help with that slight loss of sensation that some people experience.
Of course you might buy a vibrator if you are wanting to try vibrations on your penis or want to explore prostate play. A good vibrator designed with prostate stimulation in mind is a great toy to buy if you are looking to try that out or for pegging and strap-on play.
Which vibrator should I buy?
Just like when it comes to picking out a dildo deciding which vibrator to buy really depends what you want to use it for and the type of vibrations you think you might like. Obviously budget also is a factor and if you really have no idea when it comes to vibrators buying something fairly cheap like a bullet vibe can be a great place to start. A bullet vibe is not one of those toys that can also double a dildo because they are so small but they are a great first clitoral vibe option to try out. After that is really depends on what kind of vibrations you like.
Of course there are also vibrators designed to work on or in other areas of the body. There are vibrating penis sleeves and other types of penis vibrators and there are plenty of vibrating anal probes and plugs many of which are specifically designed to stimulate your g-spot there. Defining where you are going to use your vibe and then the type of vibrations you like are really the key things you need to work out toy find the right toy for you
I just can’t pick
Well obviously the answer to that is to buy both. Joking aside actually buying both a vibrator and a dildo can be a really great (and orgasm educing) idea. For many people combining the two sensations of penetration and vibration can bring about intense and powerful orgasms and for people with vulva’s who maybe are experiencing orgasm problems the combination of both can help greatly. Having something inside for you to tighten your vagina muscles around is actually really helpful in achieving orgasms. Your pelvic floor muscles are fairly key in the whole process and so having something to essentially grip and release helps to bring about an orgasm.
There is no right or wrong answer to should I buy a dildo or a vibrator? The most important thing is to make sure you buy a toy from a reputable company that is made from body safe materials. Then it is up to you to try various options and experimenting with them to find exactly what works for you and your body
