8 of the Best Positions for Strap-On Sex (with Diagrams)

Part of the beauty of sex is that it’s infinitely varied if you get a little creative. If you have penetrative sex, either with a penis or a strap-on, you’ve probably got your favourite positions that you return to again and again.

Whether you’re new to strap-on sex or you’re experienced but looking for some inspiration to change things up and keep it exciting, read on to learn about eight sexy positions you might want to try.

Missionary

It’s a classic for a reason!

In the missionary position, the receiving partner lies on their back and the giving partner positions themselves on top, with their legs between their partner’s legs. This position offers lots of skin-to-skin contact, as well as making it easy to kiss your partner or watch their face during sex.

Missionary position is often seen as the “standard” sex position, but again: it’s popular for a reason. A word of warning, though–this position is more physically taxing on the giver than it looks!

Doggy style

Doggy style is perhaps the most popular “from behind” sex position. The receiver bends over or crouches on all fours, and the giver penetrates them from behind.

Doggy style works particularly well for pegging and anal strap-on sex, but it’s a great position for vaginal penetration, too. This position is ideal for those who enjoy deep vaginal penetration, particularly those who enjoy having their “A-spot” (anterior fornix) stimulated.

This position is also great for those who enjoy a little kink, such as spanking or hair-pulling, during sex.

Here’s a bonus pro tip for you: if you’re using a curved dildo with your strap-on, it can sometimes feel better if you position it with the curve facing down. This can better stimulate the G-spot or prostate, rather than curving up away from those pleasurable spots.

Cowperson

This position is often called “cowgirl,” because it assumes that the couple having sex will always be a man doing the penetrating and a woman being penetrated. But in the interests of being more inclusive, I’ve de-gendered it. Hence: cowperson position!

In this position, the giver lies on their back with their legs straight. The receiving partner straddles them, facing their partner and lowering down onto the toy.

Cowperson position allows the receiver to take control of the depth and speed of penetration, which can be ideal for those who are new and nervous or for those who sometimes experience discomfort during penetration. It’s also a lower-energy position for the giver, which can be useful if they are tired or sore but still want to penetrate their partner.

Another benefit of this position? The visuals can be super sexy for both partners, and it allows you plenty of opportunity to drink in the view of the other person’s pleasure.

Reverse cowperson

This is similar to the previous position, except that the receiver faces away from their partner’s face and instead straddles them facing their feet. It offers an unusual angle of penetration which many people find enjoyable. Some say it’s a great position for stimulating the G-spot, which is located on the front wall of the vagina.

Bonus: if you’re on the bottom, the view of your partner’s butt moving up and down as they ride you can be incredibly erotic.

Spooning

A sexy variation on the classic cuddling position, the spooning sex position involves both partners lying on their sides. The giver (“big spoon”) presses the front of their body into the back of their partner’s body (“little spoon”) and penetrates them from behind. Try different leg positions to see what is most comfortable for you both.

Spooning is wonderful for slow, lazy sex in the morning (or at any time of day,) when you’re cosy in bed and want to have sex but don’t want to untangle from each other’s arms. Many people say this position feels particularly intimate and romantic due to the bodily closeness and skin-to-skin contact it creates.

The big spoon can also kiss the little spoon’s neck, play with their hair, or stimulate their nipples or genitals from behind.

Reverse scoop (face to face)

This is a variation of the spooning position that also allows you to kiss or make eye contact during sex. Both partners lie down and press the fronts of their bodies together. The receiver can hook their leg over their partner’s legs or hips to make the angle of penetration easier.

This angle can provide plenty of G-spot stimulation. If the receiver has a clitoris, it can also provide additional external stimulation by allowing them to grind their vulva against their partner’s body during penetration.

Butterfly position

In the basic butterfly position, the receiver lies on their back and the giver kneels (or stands) between their legs. There are numerous variations on this one: the receiver can put their legs up on their partner’s shoulders. They can also lie at the edge of a bed (or other surface) while their partner stands between their legs.

This position provides plenty of body access, so the top can touch and kiss their partner all over. It’s ideal for using a toy or a hand to provide additional genital stimulation during penetration, and also allows for lots of eye contact.

Lap dance

Named for the iconic strip club dance, the lap dance is a seated position in which the giver sits on a chair and the receiver straddles them and lowers themselves onto the dildo. If you’re the receiver, you can face your partner or face away from them, whichever feels best to you.

If you’re facing away from your partner, you or they can reach down and stimulate your clitoris or penis during penetration. If you’re facing them, there’s plenty of opportunity for kissing and eye contact.

This is another position that gives the receiver more control over the angle, depth, and speed of penetration.
